How to write calligraphy -- core skills.
All you need to achieve more consistency in your letters is a pencil and a ruler. Using the ruler and the pencil create the base line and the mean line (to create the x-height). Add the ascender line, the descender line and the slant lines that will determine the angle of your letters.
Calligraphy has many styles of lettering, influenced by; the shape of your letters, the angle of writing and the widths of upstrokes and downstrokes (thick and thin strokes). What you can create (in terms of styles of characters) depends largely on the nibs you’re using.
In the second example the downward stroke passes over the curve, looking like a part of the letter rather than an afterthought. This principle applies to the letters a, d, and g in these examples. You will need to keep an eye out for how the letters are formed in other alphabets.

Turns out, those “thicker parts” are actually, uhh, like, THE most important part to understanding how calligraphy works. The “thicker” parts are actually the downstrokes.
